GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK
Protecting Baby Bears From Tourists

A few days ago, a little cub fell out of its den. The den was dug out on the side of a really steep hill in the park. The little cub slid down the hill and couldn’t get back up.

Tourists with extremely bad judgment kept chasing the mother away from the cub while they tried to take pictures, so law enforcement rangers had to step in to keep them away while the wildlife staff placed the cub back in its den.

The mother bear was not a bit happy about any of this, but the cub was finally returned to the den where another cub was waiting.

The wildlife staff returned to check on the situation the next day, and the mother bear was in the den, and the cubs could be heard in there with her. So we’re hoping the bear family is warm and happy now!

Here’s a photo of Law Enforcement Officer Jamie Sanders and Wildlife Technician Dan Nolfi with the cub.

Poor bears unable to be reunited because of tourists interfering. Glad they are back together again. Cute picture of the baby!

I saw this cub and saw people stopping their cars in the middle of the road and jumping out to take photos. I did not see the mother, but a park employee was there trying his best to direct the traffic. The actions of some people will never cease to amaze me. Glad the little fellow was reunited with his family.

The pics are great. I’m glad the baby got reunited with his family. I saw one at the Wye in the pouring rain in Nov when the Smoky’s got 4 1/2 in 48 hours. Mama was by the river, and baby got in before her and was crying to get out of the fast and raging river. She scrambled to the side, and Mama came tumbling down the river and reunited with her baby. My pics didn’t come out great at all since it was pouring rain at the time, but the memories are with me…I’m just glad they got out of that raging river, crossed the road before getting hit and up the mountains they did scramble to safey.
